This study examines the sacred as an indigenous mechanism of environmental stewardship through an investigation of the cultural and ritual dimensions of sacred springs in Iran. Employing a documentary and library-based research design, it analyzes 639 archival documents preserved in the Folklore Unit of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) Research Center, collected by local cultural informants from different regions of the country. The analysis is informed by Émile Durkheim’s distinction between the sacred and the profane, Mircea Eliade’s conception of the manifestation of the sacred in nature, and Mary Douglas’s theory of purity and danger. Within this framework, the study explores sacred springs whose sanctity is derived from their association with Imams, prophets, and revered saints. The findings reveal that the sacred operates through three interrelated mechanisms: it sacralizes nature by symbolically linking springs with holy figures and supernatural powers; it ritualizes human–nature relationships through practices such as votive offerings, animal sacrifice, and healing rituals; and it establishes cultural taboos and moral norms that discourage pollution and environmental degradation. Together, these mechanisms constitute an indigenous system of environmental stewardship that has historically contributed to the conservation of sacred springs and their surrounding ecosystems. The study argues that, within the Iranian cultural worldview, the sacred extends beyond its religious and devotional significance to perform an important ecological function by protecting water resources, strengthening environmental ethics, and sustaining long-term human–nature relationships. These findings demonstrate the value of traditional belief systems as culturally embedded resources for understanding indigenous approaches to environmental conservation and promoting sustainable human–nature relationships.
