Pistachio occupies diverse material (economic) and immaterial (spiritual) functions within Iran’s economy, culture, art, and literature. Its presence and frequency in linguistic and written forms of folk culture and popular literature highlight the significance and status of this fruit and orchard product among Iranians and other Persian-speaking communities.



This article aims to illustrate some functional aspects of pistachio in literature and folklore, focusing on dialectal creations and the mental and linguistic representations embedded in oral traditions and intangible heritage of the Iranian people. Particular attention is given to rural areas and cities such as Damghan in Semnan Province, and Sirjan and Rafsanjan in Kerman Province, which supply the majority of pistachio production to domestic and global markets.



Beyond ethnographic, cultural, social, and economic features, the study explores indigenous knowledge, cultural heritage, and oral creativity reflected in proverbs, riddles, songs, beliefs, tales, local medicine, herbal remedies, and linguistic expressions. The methodology combines descriptive, experiential, and narrative approaches, employing both library-based (documentary) and fieldwork (interviews and conversations). Readers are thus introduced to the outcomes of collected folk literature, ethnographic data, and interdisciplinary research in Iranian studies, folklore, and anthropology, which together reveal the importance of pistachio in the cultural life of Iran and its broader historical-cultural sphere.



This research forms part of a larger project that investigates the immaterial dimensions of national economic symbols, offering insights beneficial to the history, culture, civilization, art, and literature of Iran. The study concludes with practical recommendations for applying its findings, useful to scholars and enthusiasts in social sciences, literature, and related fields. Photographs taken during various stages of the research complement documentary and field data, enabling audiences to engage more effectively with the subject matter
